The reason is structural. A token is not a thing that moves; it is a set of rules recorded on one ledger. If the same project wants its token to work on Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Polygon, it must deploy a separate staking/staking-smart-contract-exploit-risks/">smart contract on each chain. Each deployment produces a unique address. There is no global registry that Ethereum and Solana both recognise. Every network starts its numbering from zero.
This creates a practical problem. Send USDC to the Ethereum address on the Solana network, and the transaction either fails or the tokens vanish into a contract that cannot read them. The receiving chain cannot verify that a different chain's address was intended for the same project.
How to find the right address, step by step:
Go to the token project's official website or documentation. Large projects maintain a page listing every deployed contract. This is the only source you should trust. A search engine result for "USDC contract address" may show you the Ethereum address when you need the Avalanche address. Check the network name explicitly.
If you are using a cross-chain swap and the exchange interface asks you to select a destination token, it will usually display the contract address alongside the ticker. Confirm that the first and last few characters match what you verified on the project's site. Scammers create tokens with identical tickers but different contract addresses. A ticker alone means nothing.
Some explorers help. On Etherscan, the "Token" tab for a known token lists other chain deployments if the project has registered them. This is not automatic; the project must submit the information. Do not assume the list is complete.
When you are preparing a swap described on the hub page "Swapping crypto across chains," the exchange software already handles address matching. It reads the source token's contract, checks what the destination chain requires, and routes accordingly. You do not need to paste a contract address into a bridge. The exchange does that work. If you cannot find an official listing for a token on a given network, the token probably does not exist there legitimately. Projects announce new deployments. A token that suddenly appears on a chain without a project announcement is likely a fake.
